10 Signs that a Family Needs Help with Care

Are you thinking that it’s time to bring in a professional to help your family with the care of your aging loved one? Here are ten indicators that you may be ready.

  1. Your loved one has received a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or another chronic or mental health condition.
  2. The family’s primary caregiver is suffering from burnout, poor health, frustration, guilt or confusion about how to care for their loved one.
  3. Family members are confused about care options, what to do next or where to get help.
  4. Your loved one is ill or disabled with children/caregivers who live out of town or are too busy with their own lives to help.
  5. Your loved one has experienced a catastrophic event such as a fall, medication mistake or accident such as a driving incident or leaving the burner lit on the stove.
  6. Your loved one was discovered wandering, malnourished, dehydrated or unable to care for him/herself.
  7. You are concerned about your loved one’s ability to make safe and appropriate decisions for themselves or others.
  8. Children are expressing concerns about a parent’s deteriorating condition – physically or mentally. There’s evidence of depression, poor eating, excessive sleeping, poor hygiene, etc.
  9. Your love one is hospitalized and your family has been told that returning home is not an option – and you don’t know what to do next.
  10. You are worried about how you are going to pay for long-term care, either in the home or a facility, and know you need professional advice.

If any of these sign are familiar, reach out for help. Remember, thousands of families find themselves in the same spot you are. The St. Louis region has plenty of resources, services and knowledgeable professionals to help you.
